Redeye VC gets perceptive on the real issues around Facebook's f8 API and MySpace's relationships with widgets.
Redeye VC: Myspace - the next Prodigy?
Rather than recognizing the symbiotic nature of their relationship with widget companies, Myspace’s lack of a clear “widget roadmap” created a big opportunity for their #1 competitor, Facebook. While I'd say it's really far from over (MySpace has a more sophisticated relationship with widgets than is generally realised so far) we may well be seeing something fundamental developing here. As Redeye himself recognises:
Will Myspace remain a semi-closed web-property? Or will it recognize that the power is in the platform? It wouldn't be hard for Myspace to retake the offensive by offering a clear developers program. All it requires is a realization that everyone benefits from third party investment of capital and creativity in the Myspace platform. The users get far better functionality than Myspace can develop on its own. Myspace would continue to receive hundreds of millions in "free product development". And the widget companies could finally feel secure in their decision to invest in Myspace.
