I think that the widgets are by far left in the shadow for the moment. I had more traffic on some of my blogs because of the widgets than search engines some days. I'm expecting this autumn several widget ads network such as WidgeAds and MashupAds. I think that the ads are better targeted with widgets than any other form of advertising.
Anyway, I'm writing my first knol (Google Knol) and is about widgets. If is anyone interested to contribute, here it is:

you are right, most of the marketers dont take full advantage of these tools.
